Regular Course

The Canadian English Centre's regular course is actually an intensive program, which lasts only four semesters, covering a total period of one year and ten months from zero to graduation. It consists of SIX HOURS PER WEEK, being two hours in a regular class, two hours in our Friday activity class, and two hours in our Language Laboratory & Study Centre, where the students work on their material under the supervision of an instructor.

At the Canadian English Centre you have FIVE MONTHS of actual classes per semester.

  REGULAR COURSE
DURATION Four semesters covering books Zero, One, Two, Three, and Four.
BOOK ZERO :: Basic structures of the English language
Book Zero is a six-week program covering all elementary structures of the English language, essential for the student to begin to understand spoken English and make his first steps into communication. This is the only part of the course in which the classes are partly conducted in Portuguese.
BOOK ONE :: Listening Comprehension Skills. Beginning to Communicate!
From this point on our classes are in English.
Book One completes the first semester. It prepares the student to communicate in English. During Book One all classes are in English and the teacher will only speak English with the students in and OUT OF the classroom. At the end of Book One, only four month after the beginning of the course, ALL students are already beginning to communicate in English.
  BOOK TWO

:: Communication Skills. The Magical Moment!
The student is not supposed to speak Portuguese anymore!
Book Two is given in the second semester. In this book Portuguese is no longer allowed, which means that all the communication between the student and the school must be in English, no matter the subject.

After the first half of Book Two all students reach good free communication level, that is, they can understand and make themselves understood in English.

Most students at this level are already able to handle job interviews in English and have no difficulty passing basic English tests like the Brazilian college admission test, the Vestibular.

  BOOK THREE

:: English As It Is Used in Canada. REAL English!
Book Three is the student's first step out of ESL [English as a second language] and into the world of REAL ENGLISH. All the practice material is based on natural audio, video recordings, and published texts, using the same style currently used in Canada and in the United States.

At this level, the student begins to give lectures based on Canadian or North American publications. He also begins to write NEA's [Natural English Assignments], which are formal compositions based on natural English-language texts. In addition, he is introduced to our exclusive Thinking in English Program, which shows the student how to really THINK in English in a unique way, as well as to our amazing Audio Challenges, which present natural recordings from Canadian radio stations in a very special manner.

Book Three also presents the first part of our exclusive phonetic improvement program, featuring all the vowel sounds in the English language, with unmatched audio exercises that help the student perfect his English.

  BOOK FOUR

:: Natural English at ALL LEVELS. Special Focus on Idioms and Slang Terms!
Book Four is an extension of our Book Three program, featuring all the items offered in Book Three, such as lectures, NEA's, Thinking in English, and Audio Challenges. However, our Book Four program introduces hundreds of idioms and slang terms to the student, and the vocabulary sections have a more abstract approach.

Book Four offers a very challenging language training program, in which the student really feels the amazing progress that he makes, which leads him to proficiency. It also presents the second part of our unique phonetic program, featuring consonant sounds, pronunciation and stress patterns with fabulous audio exercises.

At the end of Book Four, all our graduates must take the Test Of English as a Foreign Language, TOEFL [Sample], and obtain the minimum score required by Canadian and North American universities for master's or doctoral courses, in order to receive our FIRST CERTIFICATE IN ENGLISH.
